Guide to Knowing Your Skin Type

by Minjing Yuan 13 Oct 2020 2 Comments
Knowing your skin type is ESSENTIAL

The secret to great skin is not about buying quantity or expensive products – it is knowing what your skin type is and discovering products that work well with it. There are many different skin types, but for categorisation’s sake, the most common ones are normal, dry, oily and combination. Think you know your skin type? Test your skin once in a while - your lifestyle choices, environment and age will change your skin type over time.

What’s my skin type?
  1. Blotting Sheet test

This is the quickest way to test out your skin type. Gently pat a couple blotting paper on different areas of your face (ideally one for forehead and nose and another one for other areas). Hold the sheets up against a light to view how transparent (oily) they have become.

blotting test

1. It is not very transparent = Dry Skin

2. Blotting sheet for forehead and nose have lots of oil but not for the rest of your face = Combination Skin

3. All the blotting sheets picked up lots of oil = Oily Skin

4. Blotting sheets have picked up some oil but papers are not completely translucent = Normal Skin

  1. Wash test

If you haven’t got blotting sheets at hand, try this method! Cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser and dry it lightly. Make sure not to apply any products on your face for 1 hour. How does it feel? Try making different facial expressions.

washing test

1. Skin feels right all over = Dry Skin

2. Skin feels tight on cheeks but forehand and nose are beginning to build some shine = Combination Skin

3. Shine is starting to appear on most of your face (forehead, nose, cheeks) = Oily Skin

4. Skin feels just fine, not too tight or shiny = Normal Skin
