EXFOLIATOR

Exfoliators -- both physical and chemical -- are ideal for removing clogged pores and dead skin cells, helping to create a more balanced and even-toned complexion. With regular use, your skin will feel softer and smoother, and look brighter and healthier.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an exfoliator?

An exfoliator removes dead skin cells from the surface of your skin to reveal fresher, smoother skin underneath. There are two main types.

Physical exfoliators use granular ingredients like sugar, rice bran or jojoba beads to slough off dead cells when you massage the product into your skin. They're satisfying but can be harsh if overused.

Chemical exfoliators use acids (AHA, BHA, PHA) or enzymes (like papain) to dissolve the bonds holding dead cells to the skin's surface. They penetrate more deeply, exfoliate more evenly, and are generally gentler if used at the right concentration.

Korean exfoliators tend to be gentler than their Western counterparts, often combining acids with soothing ingredients to prevent irritation. How do I exfoliate my face?

Exfoliation goes after cleansing and before toner. The method depends on whether you're using a physical or chemical exfoliator.

For a physical exfoliator (scrubs, peeling gels, exfoliating pads): Apply to damp skin. Gently massage in circular motions for 1 to 2 minutes. Don't press hard, you're trying to lift dead skin cells, not buff your face down. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.

For a chemical exfoliator (AHA, BHA, PHA toners or pads): Apply to clean dry skin. Avoid the delicate areas around your eyes, mouth, and nostrils. Wait the recommended time on the product label before continuing your routine (usually 5 to 20 minutes). Some chemical exfoliators are rinse-off, others leave-on. Always check the label.

Always follow exfoliation with hydrating products and SPF, since acids make your skin more sun-sensitive.

How often should you exfoliate your face?

2 to 3 times a week is the sweet spot for most skin types. Less than that and you won't see real benefits. More than that and you'll risk damaging your skin barrier.

Adjust by skin type and the strength of your exfoliator:

  1. Dry, sensitive, or barrier-compromised skin: once a week with a gentle AHA or PHA
  2. Normal to combination skin: 2 to 3 times a week
  3. Oily, congested, or acne-prone skin: 3 times a week with a BHA like salicylic acid (it penetrates oily pores)
  4. Mature skin: 2 to 3 times a week, alternating between brightening AHA and resurfacing retinol nights

If you see redness, tightness, stinging, or new breakouts, you're overdoing it. Scale back and prioritise hydration and barrier repair for a week or two before reintroducing.

Always apply SPF the morning after exfoliating. Acids make your skin photosensitive.
