Say hello to Florasis, our newest C-Beauty love

Say hello to Florasis, our newest C-Beauty love

By the West Lake in Hangzhou, where mist settles over the water the way it has for a thousand years of poetry and painting, a Chinese beauty brand was born in 2017: makeup that tells a story as carefully as it perfects a complexion. That brand is Florasis, and it has just landed at Skin Cupid.

You've probably seen the lipstick, engraved bullet and all, gone viral on TikTok. That's a fair introduction. It's only the beginning.

Florasis draws its visual language directly from the misty, poem-worthy scenery of Hangzhou's West Lake.

Introducing Florasis

a C-beauty brand built on Eastern craft, not just Eastern branding

Florasis (in Chinese, 花西子, Huaxizi) takes its name from a poem by the Song dynasty poet Su Dongpo, who compared the West Lake to Xi Shi, one of the four legendary beauties of ancient China. It is the whole premise of the brand: makeup as a genuine extension of Chinese art, craft and botanical wisdom, rather than an aesthetic borrowed for a limited-edition box.

Florasis's global campaigns have long been fronted by model and actress Du Juan, whose polished, eastern-vintage beauty suits the brand's culturally themed collections. She isn't a household name in the UK, and that's the point: Du Juan represents a distinctly Chinese idea of elegance, not a face borrowed from Western celebrity culture.

It's also, genuinely, a TikTok phenomenon. Florasis first broke through in China on Douyin with a lipstick engraved with scenes lifted from Chinese relief sculpture, the kind of craft usually reserved for temple carvings. That product, now the Blooming Rouge Love Lock Lipstick, is one of our four hero picks below, and it's exactly as covetable in person as on your For You page.

The Story Behind The Brand

why Florasis packaging looks like it belongs in a museum

Florasis's formulas draw on Traditional Chinese Medicine and classical beauty recipes, with peony, "the king of flowers," alongside calendula, marigold and pearl powder, chosen for heritage as much as skin benefit. What makes the brand distinctive, though, is that packaging is never just decoration: eyeshadow pans are engraved with Chinese myths and folk tales, and compact shapes sometimes echo natural forms like a lotus leaf. Take the Floral Engraving Phoenix Makeup Palette, one of our hero picks below, its engraving depicting the myth of birds paying homage to the phoenix, a lovely detail to spot the first time you open the compact.

"Every carved detail on a Florasis product is trying to tell you something. It just happens to also be a very good lipstick."

frequently asked questions

What is Florasis?

Florasis is a Chinese colour cosmetics brand founded in 2017 by the West Lake in Hangzhou. It is known for makeup that pairs traditional Eastern craftsmanship, such as hand-engraved lipstick bullets and mythology-inspired compact designs, with botanical formulas built on ingredients like peony, lotus and pearl powder.

Is Florasis a C-beauty or K-beauty brand?

Florasis is a C-beauty (Chinese beauty) brand rather than a K-beauty (Korean beauty) brand. It draws on Chinese aesthetic traditions and Traditional Chinese Medicine-inspired botanicals, which is a slightly different lane to the Korean skincare-led approach most Skin Cupid shoppers know us for, and a lovely one to explore alongside it.

Why are Florasis products so intricately designed?

Florasis treats packaging as storytelling rather than decoration. Lipstick bullets are engraved with scenes from Chinese folklore, eyeshadow palettes reference myths such as All Birds Pay Homage to the Phoenix, and compact shapes are sometimes modelled on natural forms like a lotus leaf. The engravings draw on Chinese relief carving traditions.

Is Florasis cruelty-free and vegan?

Florasis products sold at Skin Cupid are cruelty-free. They are not universally vegan: some shades within the Floral Engraving Phoenix Makeup Palette range contain carmine, a cochineal-derived colourant, so check the shade-specific ingredient list if you avoid animal-derived ingredients.

How does the Florasis Love Lock Lipstick work?

The Blooming Rouge Love Lock Lipstick has a keyhole-shaped end. Pressing it firmly until it clicks releases and extends the engraved bullet for application. The design is inspired by the Chinese tradition of Love Locks, created in collaboration with a master locksmith.

How do I book the Florasis in-store makeup service at Skin Cupid?

The Florasis in-store makeup service runs 21 to 23 August, Friday to Sunday, 12pm to 6pm. Slots are booked online in advance via skincupid.co.uk for a £42 fee, which is redeemed against a 45 to 50 minute full-look service on the day, including skin prep and a complete makeup application.
